STILWELL — Bryson McGowan's scouting report was spot on early Saturday afternoon.
The Hulbert sophomore knew McAlester's Riley Smith was getting winded during his quarterfinal bout on Friday, so McGowan planned to just out-last Smith in the 195-pound semifinals of the Maverick Conference Tournament.
And that's exactly what happened.
McGowan executed his game plan to perfection in a 7-0 victory over Smith, earning McGowan a spot in the championship finals at the Stilwell Activity Center.
"I was told he was a real strong guy, and I watched him yesterday and he was getting tired," McGowan said of Smith. "My plan was to stay heavy on his head and get him real tired, and I knew after that I could hear him breathing; I knew I had him then."
McGowan, a sophomore, wrestled a scoreless first period with Smith before taking a stranglehold on the bout.
Once the second period started, it didn't take McGowan long to go ahead.
"He deferred to me and I took bottom," McGowan said, describing the early stages of the second two-minute period. "For us, that's pretty automatic. And at 0-0, you can escape anybody."
McGowan didn't need to escape Smith, though. McGowan, instead, scored a two-point reversal before getting a quick three points on a near-fall.
From there, McGowan's only other points were on a takedown in the third period.
In the finals, McGowan — the No. 2 seed in the 195 bracket — will take on Vian's Cale Mays, the No. 1 seed.
"Last year, at the Vian dual, he was beating me 2-0," McGowan said, rehashing the last time he faced Mays. "Then, in the third, I got pinned."
McGowan said that's not likely to this time around.
"It won't happen like that this year," he said.
