‘Pass for Cash’ challenge set
Yates Auto Mall of Tahlequah is sponsoring a “Pass for Cash” athletic director competition between the Fort Gibson High School and Tahlequah High School athletic directors.
This contest will be held during half-time of the first Fort Gibson home game, Friday, Sept. 3.
Each contestant will test his skills by attempting to throw a football into the bed of a new truck without it bouncing out from different distances. All cash prizes will be donated by Yates Auto Mall to the Fort Gibson athletic department and to Tahlequah athletics.
“This is exciting for us to bring such a fun opportunity to all the fans of Fort Gibson and Tahlequah football,” said Darrell Yates, of Yates Auto Mall.

Former OU hoops player, Ken Pryor, dies
NORMAN (AP) — Former University of Oklahoma basketball player Ken Pryor, whose basket lifted OU into the 1947 NCAA championship game, has died.
OU spokesman Mike Houck confirms Pryor died Tuesday. He was 85. Houck did not know the cause of death, which was first reported by The Oklahoman.
Pryor's bank shot with 10 seconds remaining in the 1947 semifinal game gave OU a 55-54 win over Texas and sent the Sooners into the finals against Holy Cross. Holy Cross — with future Boston Celtic and NBA Hall-of-Famer Bob Cousy — beat the Oklahoma 58-47.
Pryor played for the amateur Phillips 66ers for three years after college, then worked for the oil company before opening an insurance agency in Norman in 1963. He retired in 1990.

Javelinas stun NW Missouri
MARYVILLE, Mo. — A fantastic defensive effort keyed a Texas A&M-Kingsville victory over defending national champion Northwest Missouri State on Thursday night, 16-7 at Mel Tjeerdsma Field.
The Javelinas (1-0), in the Lone Star Conference with Northeastern State, played a stifling brand of football as they limited the No. 11 Bearcats (0-1) to just 189 yards of total offense.
Matt Romig spearheaded the unit with a career high three sacks, including one with less than 25 seconds left in the game to secure the victory. Overall, the Hoggies had seven sacks on the night and forced one turnover.
On offense, it was Nate Poppell making good on his first career start. He went 26-for-38 for 258 yards and a touchdown.
He connected with seven different receivers in the game, including running back Fred Winborn on a beautiful 26-yard scoring pass in the second quarter.
