STILWELL — For the second time this season, the Sequoyah Lady Indians took down Stilwell. This time it was not an amazing comeback by the Lady Indians, instead Sequoyah was in a difficult position — ahead only by one.
In the end, Sequoyah ran away with a 10-5 victory on the road Thursday afternoon.
Junior Saharra Henson sparked the Sequoyah offense early on, managing a single in the first. Senior infielder Trinity Busby followed with a walk, and Megan Towie singled to center field, scoring Henson to take the lead at 1-0.
Sequoyah increased its lead to 2-0 in the third and all the way to 6-0 in the fourth.
In the fourth, Towie got to second base and another high pitch advanced her to third. Senior Summer Cunningham got an RBI single to take a larger lead.
Sequoyah scored again on an error by the Stilwell catcher. Sequoyah’s Jamie Linch and Ashlea Mounce both got on base and both stole a base to put runners at second and third. Kara Linch stepped up to the plate and sent both runners home. Sequoyah ended the top of the inning up by six runs.
Stilwell’s only inning that they put up runs was the bottom of the fourth, but they managed to do some damage.
Stilwell cut Sequoyah’s lead to 6-5, but that’s as close as the home team would get.
In the fifth, Towie scored Busby and ran across the plate after Feather Pacheco bunted. The last runs put on the scoreboard were a double RBI that put Towie on third. Sequoyah ended the score 10-5
“They had one big inning and they did a good job and scored,” said Sequoyah coach Jeff Turtle. “But we did a good job and came back and score.”
Sequoyah increased its record to 18-7 and is now ready for the long weekend.
“I think we’re ready for a break,” Turtle said. “We will work a little bit tomorrow (Friday) and let them go.”
Turtle was not pleased with the pitching in the fourth inning.
He said: “We left some out at the plate and they came back.”
Sequoyah will play again on Sept. 7 when it travels to Wagoner at 4:30 p.m.
