Hulbert uses its height to prevail over Porter

MUSKOGEE — For the Porter Pirates, it was a case of not being able to see the forest because of the trees.

The Hulbert Riders used the height advantage of Craig Potts, Parker Taylor and Mason Fielden to beat the Pirates 62-42 in the Small School boys game in the 33rd Bedouin Shrine Classic at Muskogee High’s Ron Milam Gymnasium on Tuesday.

“I bet they didn’t make a 3-point shot all night,” said Porter coach Jason Jack. “They took advantage of their size.”

Potts, a 6-4 senior, led the way for Hulbert (7-3) with a double-double, scoring 17 points and pulling down 11 rebounds while Taylor, a 6-4 freshman, had 10 points along with Chris Vance and Fielden, a 6-1 freshman, had 15 points and seven rebounds. Jacob Richardson led Porter (8-2) with 16 points while Cody Winkle added 12.

“We kinda game planned it from the beginning,” Hulbert coach Darron McCord said. “I can’t say enough, even our young kids. It was just a good job by everyone.”

Potts had a premonition that it was going to be a good night.

“Whenever I first looked at them, I thought that this was gonna be our game,” Potts said. “All coach told me to do was box out and get rebounds. I just did my job.”

Hulbert never trailed in the game, grabbing a 29-22 lead at halftime. Thanks to a 32-18 advantage rebounds, the Riders were able to seize control in the third quarter and held a 49-25 lead heading into the final stanza.

Hulbert will now face Spiro at 6 p.m. Friday at Muskogee High School while Porter meets Graham at 6 p.m. Thursday, also at the Civic Center.
