Sequoyah softball run-rules Lady Haymakers

Sequoyah sent Haskell home early Tuesday evening in the Lady Indians’ run-rule, 8-0 victory in five innings.  Sequoyah is now 17-7 on the season with county rival Keys on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.

Sequoyah started off great and did not let off the reigns to shutout Haskell. SHS was held to one run in the first inning.

But Sequoyah came up big defensively in the second by not allowing a runner to touch first.

After beating the throw to first and a walk, the Lady Indians get lucky after bunting and the throw is too high for the first basemen. It scored one and had runners on second and third. Sequoyah was not done swinging the bat, a dinkier over third scored another with first and second occupied.

The grounder to the shortstop came up throwing third out. With some more luck on their side, Sequoyah advanced to second and third after another overthrow.

A pop fly to right innocently hit the grass, scoring the third run of the game. A wild pitch sent a runner to third and then home after an overthrow at third.

Next at the plate was junior Saharra Henson, showing she knows how to swing the bat after finding a opening behind the center fielder to make the score 5-0 with her triple.

For Haskell, it was not their day.

SHS earned another triple but this one was on error, this started the bottom of the third. The pitcher from Haskell struck the Lady Indian batter and sent her to first.  With a runner in scoring position Sequoyah went for the sacrifice steal and it worked. The Lady Indians were out at second but scored a run making it 6-0 to end the third.

The fourth inning for Sequoyah was their last inning at bat.  The Lady Indians grounded out to short and flew out to center.  But two outs did not stop Sequoyah from finding runs.  They got on with a grounder to short and a line drive to center.  SHS got a double to center that scored both runs ending the fourth 8-0.

Haskell started the fifth with a fly out to third. Haskell got on with a grounder to short, but a pop out to the catcher and a strikeout would end the game.

“I didn’t know we would get that (the shutout),” said Sequoyah coach Jeff Turtle.

Turtle was pleased with the pitching saying, “Pitching was good. The ball moved around enough to keep them off balance.”

Last Friday Sequoyah had a rough game at the Hall of Fame tournament. They left the bases loaded twice.

Turtle said about the batting, “Hopefully we can continue that. We swung the bat good. We scored every inning.”

After the errors at first Sequoyah was able to advance the bases.

Turtle said, “They threw the ball away but we got some speed that helped us.”

Sequoyah hosts Keys Wednesday and travels to Stilwell on Thursday.  The Lady Indians are prepared to battle both teams.

“We’ve played enough games to do things right.  We got to get up and swing the bat and hit,” said Turtle.  “Hopefully things will go how they have been.”
