NORMAN — Ten members of the Oklahoma track and field program were named to the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic Track and Field Team.
Female athletes, Amy Backel, Brittany Borman, Jessica Engel, Karen Shump and Sherine Wells, and male athletes, Eric Bailey, D’Andre Fisher, Rob Sorrell, Jeremy Sudbury and Kevin Williams were all named to the team after top performances on and off the track throughout the 2010 season.
It was the latest honor of many for the women’s program as Backel, Borman and Shump all earned All-America honors. Engel finished 12th in the 5,000-meter run at the NCAA Championships while Wells qualified for the NCAA West Regional in both the 100- and 200-meter dash.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, student-athletes must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met either the NCAA Division I Indoor automatic or provisional qualifying standard or participated in the NCAA Division I Outdoor Championships (including preliminary rounds) in their respective event.
The male Scholar Athletes of the Year in Division I, along with additional individuals given All?Academic status, will be released tomorrow, Thursday, July 29. Those institutions given All?Academic Team status will be named on Monday, August 2 (men) and Wednesday, March 3 (women).
Thursday’s honor marked the latest in many for the Oklahoma men’s program. Bailey was previously named Academic-All District by ESPN the Magazine and CoSIDA while he along with Fisher, Sorrell and Williams were named to the Academic All-Big 12 Team. All five athletes qualified for the NCAA Championship preliminary rounds with Bailey advancing to the NCAA Championships where he finished 12th in the 400-meter hurdles.
Thursday’s accomplishment came one day after the USTFCCCA named five Oklahoma women to its women’s All-Academic Team.
