NSU sweeps LSC honors

Northeastern State hauled in three individuals honors Monday afternoon when the Lone Star Conference announced Players of the Week in the North Division.

Trey McVay (offense), Donald Dangerfield (defense) and Nate Robinson (special teams) were the three RiverHawks selected following NSU's 31-23 victory at Tarleton State Thursday night.

On offense, McVay hauled in three catches for 89 yards and a touchdown. McVay's TD reception — a 14-yarder — came in the first quarter to boost the RiverHawks' lead to 12-0.

NSU executed a two-point conversion following McVay's catch, increasing NSU's advantage to 14-0 late in the first period.

McVay's biggest catch, however, may have come in the fourth quarter when he recorded a 43-yard reception, setting up NSU inside Tarleton State's 5-yard line. Quarterback Kenny Davis followed with a one-yard scoring run, giving the RiverHawks a 24-7 lead with 13:39 to go.

Despite allowing the Texans 463 yards of total offense, NSU's defense came up big when it had to on Thursday.

Leading the defensive charge was Dangerfield, who recorded nine tackles — two for losses and one for a sack.

The junior from Hugo was third among all RiverHawks in tackles in 2009.

Even with McVay, who also came up with a interception on defense, making big catches on offense, the biggest play for NSU was a kick-off return in the fourth quarter against the Texans.

After TSU's Balke Wiest trimmed NSU's lead to 24-16 on a 39-yard field goal with 7:02 remaining, Robinson answered with a 95-yard kick-off return for the RiverHawks.

Robinson, a junior from Rockingham, N.C., reversed the momentum back in NSU's favor, giving the RiverHawks a 31-16 advantage with 6:46 left in the contest.

NSU hires Richmond: NSU made an addition to its coaching staff on Monday, hiring former Oklahoma State defensive end Greg Richmond.

“The NCAA has given us a grant to add a new coach on to our staff,” said NSU coach Kenny Evans.

Richmond, who signed with the Phiadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent in 2004, joins the RiverHawks after serving as the assistant strength coach at Oklahoma State.

“We’re bringing him in — even though it’s late — because this grant just happened last week,” Evans said. “He’s a late hire, so he’ll come and add to our staff.”

Evans added that Richmond, 29, will have immediate impact on NSU’s linebackers and defensive ends, concentrating on helping out the RiverHawks with their pass rush.

“We’re excited about him being a part of our staff,” Evans said.
