Hulbert’s Taylor signs with UCO

TAHLEQUAH DAILY PRESS — Hulbert senior Paiten Taylor signed a letter of intent with the University of Central Oklahoma on Wednesday making her the second local basketball player, along with Sequoyah’s Lindsey Hammer, to sign with a college this week.

Taylor chose UCO over several other schools, including Division I schools Boise State and Wyoming.

“I’m glad no more colleges can call me at 4 in the morning,” said Taylor. It’s pretty exciting because I get to play with girls that know what’s going on and want to be there.”

Taylor helped lead the Lady Riders to the Area Tournament last season as she averaged 25.5 points and 7.8 blocked shots a game.

“She’s honestly one-of-a-kind,” said Lady Riders first-year coach Alicia Zodrow. “Those type of players with her athletic ability only come around once in a blue moon.”

At UCO, Taylor will be playing under Guy Hardaker, who is 66-27 in three seasons with the school. The Bronchos were 27-6 last season.

“I really liked how positive their coaches are,” said Taylor.

In addition to playing basketball at UCO, Taylor also hopes to pursue volleyball and track. The Hulbert senior says the school having all three programs played a part in her decision.

“I’ve been told I can play volleyball and join the track team,” said Taylor. “I’m excited.”

Hulbert tips off their season on December 1 against Keys.

“I hope I can play and stay healthy,” said Taylor. “I want to help lead my team to a winning season.”

The use of cell phones while driving is increasingly becoming an issue. What do you think about cell phone use by emergency personnel, like law enforcement officers, EMTs, firemen, etc.?

• If the law allows the common citizen to use cell phones while driving, emergency personnel should be able to also.
• Emergency personnel should be held to a higher standard. Since they are often driving faster than normal, they should not be allowed to use cell phones while driving, even if other citizens can.
• They should be allowed to use them like anyone else, but their host entities (hospitals, fire departments, cities, etc.) should carry extra insurance for this reason.
• Don't know.
