TAHLEQUAH DAILY PRESS — Although the playoffs are traditionally known as a time for dramatic finishes and late-inning rallies, the Keys baseball team would have none of that Thursday as they dispatched of Colcord in the district round of the 3A playoffs at home.
The No.4 Cougars outscored the Hornets 21-0 in the two game sweep.
“We swung the bats well and the pitchers threw strikes like they’ve done all year,” said Cougars coach Chris Roby. “We came out and played like I expected us to.”
In the first game, Keys used a 10-run second inning to claim a quick 12-0 run-rule victory in three innings.
The Cougars added their other two runs in the third.
Keys scored four runs in the first and two in the second to jump out to the quick 6-0 lead going into the third.
They added three more runs later on in the fifth.
Senior pitcher Jake Fisher allowed just one hit to Colcord and had six strikeouts in three innings of work.
He was also 1-for-3 from the plate with a single.
Blake Blakley, Ryan Bridges and Bo Adams each had two hits to lead the Cougars.
Bridges had two doubles, Blakley had two singles and Adams had a single and a double in the game.
Jimmy Thirsty added a hit for Keys with single in the second inning.
The second game was not much closer as the Cougars claimed another run-rule win, this time a 9-0 decision in five innings.
Blakley was the Keys pitcher in the second game and he picked up where Fisher left off.
He pitched five innings and allowed just three hits and one run.
Blakley also had seven strikeouts and was 1-for-3 from the plate.
Fisher, Bridges and Adams each had two hits to lead the Cougars attack from the plate.
Adams had two doubles in the game.
“As a team, we really swung the bat well,” said Roby. “They did their jobs and did what they needed to win.”
The Cougars are now 29-9 and await their regional site and opponents.
Those should be released sometime late this weekend or early next week on the okrankings.com website.
“Hopefully next week we’ll gear up and get ready for regionals,” said Roby.
