Linebarger honored at conference tournament

TAHLEQUAH DAILY PRESS — Tahlequah freshman Emily Linebarger received the Newcomer of the Year Award Tuesday as the Lady Tigers and Tigers competed in the Metro Lakes Conference Tournament at Claremore.

Linebarger, who competed at No.1 singles in Laura Fillmore’s absence Tuesday, wound up fourth in the tournament with a win and two losses.

“She did an outstanding job,” said THS tennis coach Tyler Ashley.

She beat Lindsey Bone of Skiatook 6-1, 6-2 in her second match and lost a pair of matches to Rachel Collins of Skiatook in her first match, then again in the third-place match.

“She played a tough match against Collins in the first match,” said Ashley. “In her second match, she beat Bone handily which makes it a good day.”

Lauren Mitchell claimed third place at No.2 singles.

After receiving a bye in the first round she lost to Meredith Burns of Bishop Kelley 0-6, 0-6. In the third place match, she defeated Eva Trammell of Bixby 6-3, 6-2 to takes second.

The No.1 doubles team of Sarah Nelson and Danielle Whitehorn had the best finish of the day as the duo split their two matches to finish conference runner-up.

After receiving a bye, they beat Claremore 6-1, 6-1, then lost to Bishop Kelley in the championship match to settle for second.

“The No.1 doubles team did a good job of getting to the finals,” said Ashley.

For the boys team, No.2 singles player Brayden Young led the way as he went 1-1 to finish as the conference runner-up.

Young defeated Travis Beck of Claremore before losing to defending state champion Brennan Fox of Bishop Kelley in the championship. He had a bye in his first match.

“Young did a great job in his first match,” said Ashley.

The No.2 doubles team of Nicky Halpern and Hugh Purdy took third as they went 2-1 in their bracket.

The duo lost their first match to Claremore then reeled off back-to-back wins against Skiatook and Bixby to claim third.

“The No.2 doubles team played the best they’ve played all year,” said Ashley.

Seth French finished fourth at No.1 singles.

The junior lost a tough match to Taylor Berry of Bixby in his first match in the third set.

He then rebounded to beat Chris Spencer of Skiatook 6-1, 6-0, before losing to David Westfall of Claremore.

“Seth played a great match against Berry,” said Ashley. “Then he beat the second kid good. In the third round he just didn’t play well.”

The No.1 doubles team of Spencer Risenhoover and Derrick Young lost both their matches to Bixby and Skiatook and finished fifth overall.
