Lady Indians crush Victory Christian

TAHLEQUAH DAILY PRESS — After a tough time scoring points at the Shrine Tournament in Muskogee over the weekend, the Sequoyah Lady Indians had their highest point total of the season in a resounding 81-57 win at Victory Christian Tuesday night.

Nikki Lewis led five Lady Indians in double figures with a career-high 28 points, including six 3-pointers. Lindsay Hammer scored 15 points for Sequoyah, while Tara Comingdeer added 13. Lynsey Dry and Taylor Johnson scored 10 points each.

The Lady Indians jumped out to a huge lead in the first half, shooting 50 percent from the field while building a 45-17 halftime lead.

"We were dominating on offense and defense in the first half," Sequoyah head coach Bill Nobles said. "We shot the ball well, played really good defense and Nikki Lewis was spectacular."

With the win the Lady Indians avoided their second three-game losing streak of the season and improved their record to 5-6, while Victory Christian saw its record fall to 6-4 on the season.

"It was a good win for us," Nobles said. "The [Muskogee] Civic Center is a tough place to shoot and we really had a hard time this weekend. But our kids played great tonight. Victory Christian is a good team."

In the second half Victory Christian never threatened as Lindsay Hammer took over the bulk of the scoring for Sequoyah. "We put a twist in our press that really threw them off and enabled us to get a big lead," Nobles said. "We lost track of their leading scorer a few times in the second half, but overall we played a really great game."

The Lady Indians will travel to Eagletown on Friday to take on the Lady Eagles, who are currently 5-8 and on a three-game losing streak.

Sequoyah will then wrap up the week with their second home game of the season against Riverside. That game was originally scheduled for December but was cancelled due to inclement weather.

"It'll be nice to actually play a home game," Nobles said. "We've been on the road practically all season, so it'll be nice to play in our own gym."

On the boys side, a huge third quarter enabled the Indians to win their third game in a row and their seventh out of their last nine. Sequoyah outscored Victory Christian 22-9 on their way to a 75-61 win over the Crusaders.

Cody Fourkiller once again led the Indians in scoring, this time with 16 points, as the Indians turned a six-point halftime lead into a 19-point cushion after three quarters.

"The third quarter was a big turning point," head coach Larry Grigg said. "We didn't play all that well defensively in the first half, but we played well in the third."

Once again the Indians shot the ball well from the outside, making 8-of-14 3-point shots in the first half and 12 3-pointers overall.

However, Grigg had special praise for post player Travis Sanders, who scored 14 points on the night.

"Travis Sanders really played well," Grigg said. "He scored over a really big kid tonight and that's something we're going to need going forward."

Kialo Vann was the other Indian in double figures with 11 points. In all 10 players scored for Sequoyah.

"We got some balanced scoring tonight," Grigg said. "That makes us real hard to defend."

Sequoyah's basketball teams will continue their travels when they go to Eagletown to take on the Eagles on Friday.
