TAHLEQUAH DAILY PRESS — The Northeastern State University men’s basketball team continued with its early-season struggles on Monday night at Jack Dobbins Field House.
The RiverHawks fell to 0-4 on the season as the Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys beat NSU for the second time this season, 75-53.
The RiverHawks had back-to-back 3-pointers to start the game, one from Jason Jones and the other from Ben Rovenstine, as NSU jumped out to a 12-4 lead.
However, while the RiverHawks started off living by the three, they were also dying by the three as Arkansas Tech had four straight 3-point possessions to take back a 13-12 lead.
NSU eventually trailed at halftime, 34-22.
Coming out of the locker room, Jones continued his shot shooting with a 3-pointer as NSU eventually cut the lead down to six points, 34-28.
Arkansas Tech then put the game away with a run of 20-2 that spanned just under six minutes.
Tech’s Brandon Friedel’s 3-pointer with 13:22 left in the half gave Arkansas Tech a 56-32 lead. Friedel led all scorers with 25 points for the Wonder Boys.
NSU was never able to get the lead below 20 after that.
Jones finished the game with 15 points to lead the RiverHawks. He was followed up by Rovenstine’s nine points.
Jessie Scroggins had eight points with Aaron Arango having seven and Ralph Monday having six. Ja’Mal Stewart had five while Marlon Burnett had two and Ricky Branham had one.
The RiverHawks next play on Thursday as they travel to Eastern New Mexico. The women play at 6 p.m. with the men at 8.
