NSU tennis tops NW Missouri State

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — The Northeastern State women’s tennis team picked up its fifth-straight win after defeating Northwest Missouri State 7-2 Saturday afternoon at St. Joseph Tennis & Swim Club.

The RiverHawks (6-1, 2-0 MIAA) continued their hot start to the season, while the Bearcats (0-1, 0-1 MIAA) were just beginning their 2013 campaign.

The triumph was highlighted by NSU’s top doubles team of senior Ivana Belejova and freshman Kristina Savchenkov upsetting the No. 22-ranked pair of Camila Quesada and Alexis Bartek 9-8 (7-5).

“We played great in doubles today, especially at No. 1,” NSU coach Amanda Stone said. “I’m happy we were able to come up here and get two wins in conference play. We still have a long way to go, but we’re headed in the right direction.”

The first point was secured on the third court by junior Martina Bruzikova and sophomore Barbora Jirickova. They defeated Natalia Galindo and Stephanie Mannix 8-2. NSU’s second-pair of juniors Jeanne Mallem and Houda Bellamine topped Emily Hoffman and Gisela Font 8-5 as the RiverHawks swept the first three points of the match.

The green and white quickly earned the fifth and decisive point of the match as Savchenkov and Bruzikova kicked off singles action with identical 6-0, 6-1 wins at the second and fifth courts, respectively. Savchenkov bested Galindo, and Bruzikova trumped Mannix.

Bellamine added an insurance point for the RiverHawks with a 6-1, 3-6, 1-0 (10-2) win over Font from the fourth court.

Northwest Missouri State finally got on the board when Quesada defeated Belejova 6-4, 6-3 on the top court and Bartek defeated Mallem 6-4, 6-3 from the third position.

Jirickova closed out the match with an 8-5 win over Hoffman from the bottom of the lineup.

A tough test awaits Northeastern State, as the team will meet No. 28 Tarleton State at 9 a.m. Feb. 22 in Arkadelphia, Ark.
