NSU tennis sweeps Harding to start season

SEARCY, Ark. — The Northeastern State women’s tennis team won its season opener 9-0 over Harding University Tuesday afternoon on the HU Tennis Courts.

The RiverHawks (1-0) welcomed new coach Amanda Stone with a bang, as she picked up her first-career victory as a collegiate head coach.

NSU won on all three doubles courts by a combined score of 24-8.

The junior tandem of Jeanne Mallem and Houda Bellamine took the top doubles flight 8-6 over Benyapa Phumtip and Ali Rowden.

The other two matches weren’t as close, as NSU won both by identical 8-1 scores. Senior Ivana Belejova and freshman Kristina Savchenkov teamed up to top Chelsea Lanier and Katie Huff on the second court, while junior Martina Bruzikova and sophomore Barbora Jirickova defeated Kaleigh Wagner and Maria Moreno at the third flight.

Singles competition saw more of the same, as no RiverHawk conceded more than four games in straight-set triumphs.

Savchenkov claimed a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Rowden at the second flight, while Bruzikova topped Lanier 6-0, 6-0 on the third court. Courts 4 and 5 were also 6-0, 6-0 sweeps, as Mallem defeated Wagner and Bellamine beat Huff.

Jirickova took down Moreno 6-2, 6-1 at the bottom of the lineup, and Belejova was leading Phumtip 6-1, 5-0, on the top court before Phumtip retired.

Northeastern State will next travel to Arkadelphia, Ark., for three matches. The first will be a huge early-season test against No. 22 Drury at 4 p.m. Friday.

What do you think of Sen. McCain's proposal to allow cable TV channels to be sold a la carte (individually, rather than in bundles with a lot of channels no one wants)? Bear in mind some less popular channels could go by the wayside with no bundling support, and that while overall packages should theoretically decrease in cost, individual channels might cost more.

Strongly in favor of a la carte.
Somewhat in favor of a la carte.
