Ron Cox retires as NSU’s tennis coach

Northeastern State University women’s tennis coach Ron Cox has announced his retirement, effective Nov. 1.

Cox steps down after serving as the head coach of the women’s tennis program since 1992. The 1993 NSU Athletic Hall of Fame honoree has spent a total of 41 years at Northeastern State, beginning when he first stepped on campus as a student in 1960.

“Northeastern State appreciates Coach Cox’s service to our institution,” Director of Athletics Tony Duckworth said. “We wish him the best in the next chapter of his life.”

Cox, a 1964 graduate, earned seven athletic letters during his time as a member of the Redmen. He lettered four years in tennis and three years in basketball. He was also a three-time, all-conference honoree (men’s basketball in 1964 and men’s tennis in 1963 and 1964).

Cox returned to NSU as an assistant men’s basketball coach and an instructor of physical education in 1971. He served as a basketball assistant for four years (1971-73, 1978-80), and he has been an instructor at NSU for 37 of the last 42 years (left the school temporarily from 1973-78). He was promoted to head men’s basketball coach in 1980, which was a title he held for two seasons.

Cox ended his basketball coaching career in 1983 and transitioned to the Director of Recreational Facility. He has held that title until his official retirement.

He took over the reins of the women’s tennis team in 1992, and he has run the program for the last 21 years.

A national search for a new head coach is currently underway.
