Veteran coach hired as Arkansas St. assistant
JONESBORO — A former assistant coach at Tulsa and Rice is the latest addition to Arkansas State football coach Gus Malzahn's staff.
Malzahn announced Monday that Dean Jackson was hired as an assistant coach.
Jackson spent the past three seasons as the assistant head coach and defensive line coach at Naaman Forest High School in Garland, Texas. Before then, he spent three seasons at Tulsa, where he served as tight ends coach, director of high school relations and an administrative assistant. He and Malzahn worked together while Malzahn was offensive coordinator for the Golden Hurricane.
Jackson went to Tulsa after coaching the tight ends for one season at Rice in 2006, when the Owls played in the New Orleans Bowl.
He also has coached at several other high schools in Texas.
Oklahoma Christian to leave NAIA for NCAA Div. II
OKLAHOMA CITY — Oklahoma Christian University wants to jump from the NAIA to NCAA Division II.
President-elect John deSteiguer announced Monday that the private school plans to apply for membership later this year, and already has been accepted into the Heartland Conference.
The Eagles have been members of the NAIA since the 1960s. Oklahoma Christian teams have won national titles in men's golf (2009) and men's tennis (2003), and numerous individual national titles in track and field dating back to 1968.
Officials say changes in the NAIA's composition and the growth of the school in recent years have led them to re-evaluate Oklahoma Christian's affiliations.
Athletic Director Curtis Janz has been studying the possible change since 2006, and says the NCAA Division II application will be submitted on June 1.
