MIAA Men
Ahead of the pack
Fort Hays State and Central Missouri: Both clubs stand at 11-4 in league play. Fort Hays State, which has won its last seven games, closes out the regular season with two games at home (Missouri Western, Lincoln) and one on the road (Washburn). Central Missouri has road games at Southwest Baptist and Washburn with a home game against Truman State sandwiched in between.
Up and coming
Central Oklahoma: Winners of their last four games, the Bronchos have climbed the league standings and are currently in a tie for third with Washburn.
On the skids
Lincoln: It’s been a dreadful season for the Blue Tigers, and losing every game since Jan. 16 adds insult to injury.
Notes
Brunson nabs honor: A career-high 35 points against Nebraska Kearney and an average of 22.5 points and 6.5 rebounds throughout the week helped Fort Hays State’s Dwayne Brunson land MIAA Men’s Basketball Athlete of the Week honors. Brunson, a 6-foot-7 junior forward, is Fort Hays State’s leading scorer with 15.7 points per game.
MIAA Women
Ahead of the pack
Washburn: Owning a half-game lead on Central Missouri in the standings, Washburn has won eight straight games and sports a 13-1 mark in league play. The Lady Blues have three home games (Neb. Kearney, Fort Hays State, Central Missouri) and a road tilt (Emporia State) left on the schedule.
Up and coming
Emporia State: The Hornets are playing catch-up behind Washburn and Central Missouri, but nine straight wins have certainly kept them in the race. Emporia State, which is 9-0 at home, has four games left, with three at home against Pittsburg State, Northeastern State and Washburn.
On the skids
Northwest Missouri State: The Bearcats, once 5-5 and in the middle of the pack in the league, are now 5-10 after five straight setbacks.
Notes
Lewis lands accolade: Central Missouri’s BreAnna Lewis was named the MIAA Women’s Basketball Athlete of the Week for her performances last week. The 5-foot-7 junior guard averaged drained 11 3-pointers in the Jennies’ two wins over Lindenwood and Lincoln.
Jockeying for position: With only two weeks left in the regular season, the standings are as uncertain as ever. Seven teams could are battling for the four first-round byes in the MIAA Tournament, and Washburn, Central Missouri and Emporia State are competing for the top spot.
Games of the week
Men: Fort Hays State at Washburn, Thursday
Could be Fort Hays last significant challenge of the regular season.
Women: Fort Hays State at Washburn, Thursday
Fort Hays State could help out every other team and try and bring Washburn back to the pack with less than a handful of games left in the regular season.
