League champ

Coweta: The Tigers coasted to the league crown, hardly ever being challenged except for a three-point game against Bishop Kelley during the stages of the season. The combination of Zach Norris, Caleb Norris, Ty Gunter and Austin Swboni proved to be too much for the rest of the Metro Lakes Conference. The Tigers earned home regional and should be one of four teams to qualify for the Class 5A state tournament from the east side of the state.



Solid second

Bishop Kelley: The Comets were good in league play, just not when they were playing Coweta. After a crushing loss to Tahlequah, Bishop Kelley followed it up with a 55-40 loss to Coweta, which allowed the Tigers to wrap up the league crown. Matt Craig and Co., though, should make a run at a state-tournament spot in the coming weeks.



Tough luck

Claremore: The Zebras have one last (legitimate) chance to get their first win of the season on Friday at Tahlequah. That will be Claremore’s last regular season game before taking on 5A No. 2 Memorial in the first round of the playoffs — which will effectively end the Zebras’ season.



Notes

Playoff hopefuls: The Metro Lakes Conference should have at least three teams qualify for the eight-team area tournament on March 1. Coweta and Bishop Kelley should be favored to win their regionals, and the Pryor-Skiatook winner in the first round of regionals will likely lose to Memorial in the regional finals but still reach the area round. Tahlequah is the league’s only other chance to reach the area tournament, and the Tigers will face Chickasha in the first round of the playoffs at Coweta on Feb. 22.

On a roll: For a club that has been up and down this season, Pryor is on the rise right now. The Tigers have won four straight games heading into Friday night’s matchup against Coweta. Zac Baumert has also come on as of late for the Tigers, averaging 19.8 points per game during Pryor’s winning streak.

Hanging tough: Claremore is still winless this season, but the Zebras have had some close calls. Before an overtime loss to Pryor on Tuesday, Claremore had games against Collinsville and Oologah this month decided by six points or less. The Zebras even managed to hang close in a loss to Bishop Kelley on Feb. 5.



MLC Girls

League leader

Collinsville: The Cardinals have been on a roll since Jan. 29, winning six straight games, including games against Bishop Kelley, Tahlequah and Claremore. A win over Skiatook on Friday night gives Collinsville the outright title.



Up and coming

Skiatook: The Bulldogs have hit their stride last in the season. Winners of their last five games, the Bulldogs could play spoiler and knock off Collinsville on Friday night, creating the possibility of a three-way tie atop the standings, if Tahlequah were to beat Claremore.



On the skids

Bishop Kelley: Once a contender for the league crown, the Comets lost four of their last five games to close out the regular season. A loss to Skiatook sent Bishop Kelley into the playoffs on a sour note with Noble awaiting the Comets in the first round of the postseason.



Notes

Playoff hopefuls: Of the Metro Lakes Conference teams, Tahlequah seems poised to make the deepest run in the playoffs. The Tigers should beat Coweta in the first round of the playoffs, and then a matchup against Guthrie would likely follow. Bishop Kelley and Collinsville should also win first-round regional games, but that could be it from the league. Claremore will have its hand full with Memorial in the first round.

A Schu in: Regardless of how Skiatook ends the season, it can feel good knowing that Mickayla Schulanberger has three more years of eligibility left. Skiatook’s freshman guard has found her rhythm at the varsity level and has averaged 21.3 points in her last three games.
