Sequoyah extends streak to seven games

TAHLEQUAH DAILY PRESS — The Sequoyah Lady Indians softball continued to be as hot as the weather over the weekend, winning four games at the Beggs Festival to extend their season-opening winning streak to seven games.

On Friday, the Lady Indians opened the festival with a 2-1 win over Kellyville. Outfielder Nikki Lewis and pitcher Cortney Glass provided the RBIs for Sequoyah, who used stifling defense and a complete-game effort from Glass to get the win.

Glass struck out five while allowing only four hits in picking up the win.

In their second game, the Lady Indians again hung on for a one-run victory, this time 6-5 over Haskell.

The Lady Indians scored four runs in the first inning before allowing four runs in an error-filled fourth inning that tied the game.

However, the Lady Indians struck back for one run in the fifth and two more in the sixth before stopping a late Haskell rally.

Shannon Barnett pitched the complete game for Sequoyah, striking out eight while allowing two earned runs. Glass and Summer Cunningham had two RBIs each for Sequoyah.

Saturday's first game was yet another one-run affair. Caitlin Dry scored on an error in the first inning for the Lady Indians, and Glass made it stand up. In another complete game, the senior pitcher struck out 10 while allowing just two hits in the 1-0 victory.

In their final game against Panama, the Lady Indians were finally able to breathe easy, scoring eight runs in the first three innings before cruising to an 8-1 victory.

Dry, Glass and first baseman Lindsay Hammer each had two RBIs.

"We played pretty well overall," Sequoyah head coach Jeff Turtle said. "Our only bad inning was the fourth against Haskell. We pitched really well but just couldn't come up with big hits at times. But it was good for us to be in those different situations."
