Jordan Schultz didn't set a school record this time around against Tahlequah. But the Claremore junior came close.
Schultz scored 34 points & dished out seven assists as Class 5A No. 5 Claremore pulled off a season sweep of the Lady Tigers with a 61-29 demolition at the TMAC on Thursday night.
“Words just can’t describe the importance to the team that she is," said Claremore coach Mark Campbell of Schultz, who set a school record with 40 points in the first matchup between the two schools. “She is starting to play really good defense, and she played really good tonight.”
The Lady Zebras (17-4, 11-1 Metro Lakes Conference) used a 12-0 run - which turned into 17-2 run - to close out the second quarter to coast to their fifth win in a row.
Tahlequah coach Chad Walker saw why it was so easy for Claremore.
“It looked to me like our girls were ready to go to softball, track, tennis and golf,” said Walker, whose team dropped to 6-14 overall and 2-8 in league play. “It looked to me like they didn’t have much heart out there tonight.”
Tahlequah was able to hang around in the first half when both teams were tied at 13 midway through the second quarter. But from that point, it was all Claremore.
“I go into every game thinking we can win,” said Walker, whose team will take the floor again tonight at the TMAC against the Bixby Spartanettes. “But the girls that are coming out on the floor have had their butts beat for the last several years, and they have this pre-mindset thinking they can’t win the game. So they step out on the floor, and that’s what it looks like.”
Joining Schultz, who was 16-of-22 from the field, in double figures was the Lady Zebras’ Megan Martin, who finished with 13 points to go along with 10 rebounds. As a team, Claremore shot 56 percent (28-of-50) from the field, including a sharp-shooting fourth quarter that saw the Lady Zebras torch the net at a 10-of-15 clip.
The Lady Tigers, who were a mere 1-of-11 in the fourth quarter, struggled shooting the ball all night and finished 10-of-40 (25 percent) from the field.
To matter worse, not a single Tahlequah player reached double figures. Gentry Blankenship, who had eight points by intermission, didn’t score after halftime and finished with eight points as did senior forward Kaley McNeil.
Walker, however, credited Tahlequah’s lopsided defeat to lapses on defense.
“We were supposed to be denying her (Schultz) the ball, and we did a bad job of that,” Walker said. “We were supposed to double her (Schultz) when she catches the ball, and we didn’t do that.
“We’re supposed to have back-side help off of a triangle (defense), and we did a bad job of that. We’re supped to set a trap on the baseline in our 2-3 zone, and we did a bad job of that. We’re supposed to deny an inbounds pass, and we did a bad job of that.”
