• NSU drops second straight tennis match

PENSACOLA, Fla. – After opening the season with five straight victories, NSU has now dropped two straight tennis matches.

After losing at Abilene Christian (7-2) on Saturday, the RiverHawks were shut out by West Florida in a 9-0 decision in the West Florida Classic on Monday.

The Argos opened with 8-6 victories in No. 1 and 2 doubles before winning 8-3 No. 3 doubles.

Taylor Brewster and Caitlyn Baines beat Zuzanna Osinska and Emina Spirtovic in No. 1 doubles before Paulina Ojeda and Mariana Soonervig downed Claire Chanay and Ivana Belejova in No. 2 doubles.

In No. 3 doubles, Barbara Oliveira and Mariana Soonervig made easy work of Michaela Romanova and Karolina Cichon.

In No. 1 singles, Oliveira, ranked No. 16 in the nation, defeated Osinska, 7-6, 6-1.

Ojeda, ranked 33rd, outlasted Spirtovic, 7-5, 2-6, 6-7 (6) in No. 2 singles.

In No. 3 through 5 singles, Brewster, Baines and Luiza Sonnervig won in straight sets over Romanova, Valerie McKinney and Cichon, respectively.

And to keep the RiverHawks (5-2 on the season) off the scoreboard was West Florida’s Mariana Soonervig, who beat Chanay in three sets (6-3, 4-6, 10-7).

With the victory, West Florida improved to 5-4.

The RiverHawks will continue play in the West Florida classic through Wednesday.

• TU completes 2010 football schedule

TULSA (AP) — The Tulsa Golden Hurricane will open the 2010 football season with a Conference USA game at East Carolina.

The conference schedule was released Tuesday. The nonconference schedule was announced in January.

TU opens on Sunday Sept. 5 against ECU in Greenville, NC.

The Hurricane will have home conference games against Tulane, Rice, Texas-El Paso and Southern Mississippi. C-USA road games will be at Memphis, SMU and Houston.

The nonconference schedule includes road games at Oklahoma State and Notre Dame and home games against Bowling Green and Central Arkansas.

• Thunder signs Shakur to deal

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The Oklahoma City Thunder has signed former Arizona guard Mustafa Shakur to a 10-day contract.

Thunder General Manager Sam Presti announced the deal on Tuesday. Shakur is being called up from the Thunder’s NBA Development League affiliate in Tulsa. The 6-foot-3 Shakur was averaging 20.7 points and 7.2 assists per game for Tulsa.

Shakur went undrafted out of Arizona in 2007 and played overseas in Poland, Spain and Greece in recent years.

• Briggs, Bostwick honored by NAIA 

POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. (AP) — Oklahoma Wesleyan guard Steve Briggs has been named as the NAIA Division II men’s basketball player of the year while his coach, Donnie Bostwick, received national coach of the year honors.

Briggs and Bostwick received their awards Monday at the national tournament, where they have helped the Eagles reach the semifinals.

 Oklahoma Wesleyan is 30-4 and will play St. Francis (Ind.) on Monday night. The Eagles are trying to repeat as the NAIA Division II champion.

Briggs, a 5-foot-11 senior from Duncanville, Texas, has scored more than 2,000 career points and is averaging 21.4 points and 2.6 rebounds per game. His 493 career 3-pointers is among the highest totals in college basketball history.

Bostwick is in his third season at Oklahoma Wesleyan and entered Monday with an 88-14 career record.
