Star in the making

TAHLEQUAH DAILY PRESS — Recent Keys High School graduate and rodeo competitor Yance Day has been a busy man this month.

Day started the month by winning the Bareback Riding event at the High School State Finals. The rodeo was held on July 9 in Duncan.

He then traveled to the National High School Rodeo in Farmington, New Mexico, last week. There he was leading the Bareback Riding event until the final event. Day instead claimed the title of Reserve Champion.

Although Day has been competing in rodeos for five years, he has only been participating in Bareback Riding events for two years.

Prior to that he did bull riding. Day does not regret the switch.

“I like it a lot better,” Day said.

Day will continue his rodeo career this fall when he begins college at Dodge City Community College. He signed with the school at nationals.

“I’m pretty excited,” said Day. “I’m just looking forward to it.”

He could also be making the move to the professional ranks soon as well.

He recently applied for a permit to compete in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association or PRCA events.
