Marisa Girdner’s two-out single that scored Whitney Wright in the fourth inning was all Class 6A No. 9 Tahlequah needed to beat 5A No. 5 Sequoyah, 4-3, at Lady Tiger Field on Thursday night.
The victory for the Lady Tigers came after they blasted Jay, 12-3, in the first game of the triangular. Tahlequah is now 4-0 on the season.
Sequoyah is 1-1 with the loss and an 8-0 victory over Jay.
The Lady Indians jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning over Tahlequah, but the Lady Tigers responded with a three-run first inning of their own on Kirsten Chase’s three-run home run.
Sequoyah tied the game up in the fourth inning on Mariah Hooper’s RBI single.
Sequoyah made an attempt at a late comeback but failed to send a run across in the seventh, despite having runners on second and third with two outs.
“They’re very athletic,” Tahlequah coach Matt Cloud said of Sequoyah. “I think they’re better than they were last year, I really do. I think they’ll be one of the top teams in 5A.
“It was a tough game both ways, and we came out with a victory.”
Erin Dillard picked up the pitching victory for Tahlequah.
“Erin Dillard pitched her tail off in a high-pressure situation,” Cloud said. “There were a lot of people there, and it was a home opener against one of the best teams in 5A.”
Tahlequah will now be off until after March 26 when it plays at Poteau.
