NORMAN —
Oklahoma was ranked No. 4 in The Associated Press preseason Top 25 on Saturday, marking the 12th straight year it will start the year ranked in the top 10.
But rising in the rankings has been a tough chore during that span.
OU won its last national championship in 2000, rising from No. 19 in the preseason to No. 1. The 2010 was the last time the Sooners finished ranked higher than they started.
Even with the 2000 season factored in, the Sooners average finish is 3.75 spots lower than its preseason ranking.
Since 2001, it's 5.72 spots lower.
