Cougars' running game held in check by Metro Christian

TULSA — Cody Cole and Trevor Eubanks ran when and where they wanted to in a first-round playoff victory over Spiro on Nov. 9.

Metro Christian didn’t allow the same luxury on Friday night as the Patriots, ranked fifth in Class 3A, shut down Keys’ running game in a 42-14 rout at Patriot Stadium in Tulsa.

“They’ve done that to everybody,” Keys coach Gary Willis said of Metro Christian. “...They’ve held some very good teams to very few points.”

Metro Christian clogged up the Cougars’ running lanes and held Cole and Eubanks — minus Eubanks’ long, 53-yard touchdown run — to a combined 132 yards on 32 carries.

“We had seen enough of Keys on tape to know that Cody could break one at anytime,” Metro Christian coach Jared McCoy said. “...They were just a couple of shoe-string tackles away from breaking a few (long runs).”



Woolslayer dominates

Metro Christian’s quarterback Matt Woolslayer continued his banner season with another solid performance against Keys. The senior signal caller completed 18 of 23 passes for 233 yards and three touchdowns while also running for 101 yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries.

To make matters worse for Keys, Woolslayer was a perfect 12 for 12 for 113 yards in the first half.

“I’ve said it every week, but Matt is playing better and better,” McCoy said. “With his consistency, you can win a lot of games when you’re quarterback is playing as well as he is right now.”



Series shorts

The win for Metro Christian gave the Patriots a 1-0 lead in the all-time series with Keys.

This was Keys’ second straight season to make it to the second round of the 3A playoffs before being knocked out by a private school in Tulsa.

“We have an awesome group of seniors right here,” Willis said. “I told them, ‘whichever way this goes, you’ll always remember this.’ Our guys played with a lot of pride and character tonight.”

Metro Christian will play Seminole in the 3A quarterfinals next week. The Patriots have never made it past the semifinals, which they qualified for in 2010.

“We’ll have to go out and play a good game and execute again,” McCoy said of his team’s next game. “Hope the ball bounces our way a couple of times.”
