GROVE — Tahlequah now has its work cut out for it in chasing the District 5A-3 crown.
The Tigers started off their quest for a district title with a 2-1 loss at Grove on Monday.
Austin Riley took the loss for Tahlequah on the pitching mound despite six innings of quality stuff. Riley gave up two runs (both unearned) on four hits and three walks. He also recorded six strikeouts.
Tahlequah (0-2, 0-1), which opened its season with a 7-0 loss at Union on Friday, even out-hit Grove 7-4 but failed to push any runs across with seven runners left on base. The Tigers’ lone run scored came in the sixth inning on Lane Cobb’s RBI single.
Grove (2-0, 1-0) took a two-run lead in the fifth inning.
Tahlequah and Grove will meet again today at 4:30 p.m. at Tiger Field.
Keys girls finish in top 3 at Wagoner tournament
WAGONER — Kaylee Schneider shot a 99 to lead Keys to a third-place finish at the Wagoner tournament at Western Hills Golf Course at Sequoyah State Park on Monday.
Henryetta won the tournament title with a 364, and Wagoner was second at 403. Henryetta’s Morgan Brown won medalist honors with a 79, while Tahlequah’s Emily Pippin was second with an 88.
Kayla Hunt (102), Ali Nolan (103), Brooke Short (103), Jessica Johnson (123) rounded out the rest of Keys’ scores.
Keys will play again Thursday at the Stigler tournament.
