TAHLEQUAH —
A Cherokee County woman spoke to sheriff’s deputies Monday after two men were caught taking her family’s belongings.
Velna Vanbuskirk’s home previously caught fire and burned, and the Cherokee Nation is assisting in demolition of the remaining structure, according to deputies. Two men were recently spotted loading some of Vanbuskirk’s property into two trucks, and when questioned, they claimed they had been contracted by the tribe, but Vanbuskirk said the contract has not been awarded. When the men were confronted, one of them threatened Vanbuskirk’s son, and the suspects left with some of the property.
