NORMAN —
Oklahoma is team that has two units heading in opposite directions.
It’s far from a secret that Oklahoma’s defense has moonwalked in the last three games. After giving up 490 yards in Saturday’s 51-48 overtime victory against Oklahoma State, the unit has allowed 1,692 yards and 80 first downs in the last three games.
“Anytime you play an excellent offensive football team, a team that can run it as well as they can throw it, those offenses can stretch a defense, and, certainly, we've been stretched the last few weeks like we haven't been really all year,” OU defensive coordinator Mike Stoops said. “Things came up these last couple of weeks. We've still got to continue to try to find some better answers for what we are asking our players to do structurally, or if we are asking them to do things that aren't possible.”
The defensive coordinators from Baylor, West Virginia and Oklahoma State were thinking the same thing.
Here’s what OU’s done offensively in those three games: 1,738 yards and 102 first downs.
It’s be one of the best offensive three-game runs the Sooners have ever had.
“As much as anything, these guys have just been absolutely tremendous finishing the ballgame here the last couple of weeks — confident, poised, just keep playing the next play, able to execute under stressful, tough situations,” offensive coordinator Josh Heupel said. “I’m really proud of the guys, just the way they continue to play.”
