State players pick up honors

Oral Roberts center Damen Bell-Holter has been named the Southland Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday. Bell-Holter also earned the weekly honor from College Sports Madness.

Last week, Bell-Holter scored 27 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in a 64-52 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and poured in 13 points to go with six rebounds and four blocks in a 65-61 overtime win at Sam Houston State.

Tulsa guard Kelsee Grovey was named as the Conference USA Women’s Basketball Freshman of the Week, as announced Monday by the league office. This was Grovey’s first weekly award, and the third C-USA Freshman of the Week honor for TU women’s hoops since the 2009-10 season.

Grovey, a freshman and former standout at Shawnee, averaged 15.0 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game against Marshall and East Carolina on the week. She scored a career-high 20 points against the Thundering Herd last week.

For the second week in a row, Oklahoma State’s Brittney Martin has been named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Women’s Basketball Freshman of the Week, as chosen by a media panel. The honor was the fourth freshman accolade for Martin, who shared the weekly award with TCU’s Zahna Medley.

After having the midweek off, the Syracuse, Utah native helped the Cowgirls extend their winning streak to three in a row with a 71-42 victory over No. 24 Iowa State on Sunday. OSU has now won its last two when facing a Top 25 opponent.

In the victory, Martin recorded her third-straight double-figure scoring game with 10 points and was one of five Cowgirls in double figures.
