OSU using bye week to get healthy

STILLWATER — With the health of starting quarterback Wes Lunt up in the air, the bye week couldn’t have come at a better time.

The Oklahoma State football team gets the chance to assess the status of Lunt — which won’t be made public until the Friday before the Texas game on Sept. 29 — as well as assess the rest of the team after three games in the books.

“Probably about 75 percent (of practice) is our base offense and defense and work a little bit on Texas,” OSU coach Mike Gundy said. “We still have to continue to get better at the structure of what we do. We game plan some, but we have four full days next week to work on specifics and stuff.”

While practices will focus on base systems, the week will give J.W. Walsh more chances to work with the first team offense while Lunt is sidelined.

“Even before this week you’ve got to prepare your mind like you’re the starter each day. That’s what I’ve been doing and I’m going to continue to do that,” Walsh said. “Now that I get to work more with the ones, I’m going to try to take advantage of every opportunity I have.”

While he’s prepared his mind to get most of the work, his body wasn’t quite as prepared.

“Today was a challenge because since practice began this fall I haven’t gotten this many reps,” Walsh said after Tuesday’s practice. “To be able to come out and get this many reps, it was a lot of fun. But you’ve got to be able to prepare your body to come out and be conditioned and be able to throw more balls and take more reps. My body is a little more exhausted just because of getting more reps and things like that.”

Gundy said he will give his players the weekend off starting on Friday — though they will have usual position meetings Sunday afternoon — and will also get the usual Monday off.

But while the team practices before then, the players know they have plenty to still work on.

“Whatever the coaches have planned for us, we’re going to do at 100 percent,” OSU inside receiver Josh Stewart said. “We’re not going to take off. It’s not an off week for us. Bye week is a work hard week and just an extra week to get ready for Texas.

“It’s good for us because we get to game plan more and get to really know their team. It’s a great deal for us to get ready for Texas.”

What do you think of Sen. McCain's proposal to allow cable TV channels to be sold a la carte (individually, rather than in bundles with a lot of channels no one wants)? Bear in mind some less popular channels could go by the wayside with no bundling support, and that while overall packages should theoretically decrease in cost, individual channels might cost more.

Strongly in favor of a la carte.
Somewhat in favor of a la carte.
Somewhat opposed to a la carte.
