Pickens pleased with outcome in Heart of Dallas Bowl

DALLAS — It wasn’t the Fiesta Bowl, but Oklahoma State University energy entrepreneur and mega-alum Boone Pickens was more than happy to see his alma mater playing in Dallas on New Year’s Day.

Pickens, who lives in Dallas, was on hand for the Heart of Dallas Bowl and was more than impressed watching Oklahoma State drub Purdue to the tune of 58-14 to finish the year with an 8-5 record.

“These are the really good games, when your team is up big,” Pickens said.

The OSU philanthropist wanted his fellow Dallas natives to get to watch the third-year bowl in its first year as the Heart of Dallas Bowl. Pickens had donated $25,000 for Dallas city employees to attend the game in Cotton Bowl stadium.

“I’m a part of this city and do a lot of things here in Dallas, so I wanted them to get to go to a football game, too, and get to see Oklahoma State,” Pickens said.

He was one many OSU fans on hand for the Jan. 1 bowl game. There was plenty of fans decked out in orange throughout the stadium, easily outnumbering the Purdue faithful.

“Our fans travel well. That’s why they wanted us in Dallas because they know OSU fans will come down here,” Pickens said.

For the Cowboy players, having the large contingent gave it a home-game type of atmosphere while playing just four hours down Interstate 35 from Stillwater.

“Itvdefinitely felt like a home game,” OSU senior offensive lineman Lane Taylor said. “I could tell when we came out and they announced our name, our fans were really a lot louder than them. It was great to be so close to Stillwater and have all our fans here.”

Not downtown, because it would be too congested, but on peripheral streets, like Bluff, Downing and College, and Muskogee but not downtown.
On the rural highways mainly in recreational areas, like Highways 10 and 82.
Only in special areas, like parks.
I do not think Cherokee County needs any (or more) bike trails.
