Services for Thurman Blackfox will be held on Friday, Sept. 7, at the Hulbert High School gymnasium with Pastor Jerry Henson and the Rev. D.J. McCarter officiating. Interment will follow at Keener Cemetery in Hulbert. Services are under the direction of Reed-Culver Funeral Home of Tahlequah.
Pallbearers for Thurman include Alan Alaniz, James Patterson, Kyle Ketcher, Larry Shade, Tim Thompson, Kevin Ketcher, Tyler Gutherie, and Steve Carey. Honorary pallbearers include all of Thurman’s nieces and nephews.
Thurman Blackfox was born on Sept. 2, 1950, in the family home of William and Josie (McLemore) Blackfox in Briggs. After graduating from school, Thurman attended college and obtained his associate’s degree in Okmulgee. On May 12, 1972, he married the love of his life, Gina Henson, at her family home in Lost City.
This marriage was blessed with one son and one daughter. Thurman was employed in Wagoner for 13 years as a line supervisor for Prestolite and later with the Cherokee Nation as a housing inspector for 27 years. He enjoyed his job, his co-workers, and all the people he assisted over the years.
When Thurman wasn’t working, he enjoyed reading, NASCAR, watching classic westerns on TV, and the occasional fishing trip with friends. There was nothing more important to Thurman than his family. He adored his children and grandchildren, and every activity they participated in. The proud “Pops” in the crowd was bound to be Thurman. If there were a bunch of kids at a family gathering, you could bet Thurman was right in the middle.
Thurman was Mr. Fixit in the family, from plumbing to electricity, carpentry to mechanics, Thurman could fix it. He was the one you turned to when you needed the sympathetic ear of a friend, one who always made time for you. He was patient, kind, and always lived by the golden rule. A Christian by faith, Thurman was a member of Keener Baptist Church, where he taught the love of God in Sunday school for years.
Thurman was called to his eternal home with the Lord on Sept. 7 in Mt. Juliet, Tenn., with his wife and family by his side. Thurman was 61 years old. He is already missed for his smile, his humor, his understanding, and the love he gave his family and friends alike.
Thurman is preceded in death by his parents; his father- and mother-in-law, Rufus and Marjorie Henson; two brothers, Robert and Billy Gene Blackfox; and one sister, Lorene Blackfox.
Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 40 years, Gina, of the home in Lost City; one son, Scottie Blackfox and wife Nichole of Nashville, Tenn.; and one daughter, Sasha Qualls and husband Bryan of Hulbert.
He leaves three sisters, Corene Alaniz and husband Arnold of Mesquite, Texas, Jeananna Hendricks of Tahlequah, and Cynthia Blackfox of Dallas, Texas. His legacy lives on in his three adored grandchildren, Kinsley Shea Blackfox and Summer Blackfox of Nashville, Tenn., and newly arrived granddaughter Keelea Rae Qualls, born Sept. 7, of Hulbert.
Those he leaves include four sisters-in-law, Loretta Shade of Lost City, Katherine Patterson of Tahlequah, Verna Thompson of Lost City, and Martha Ketcher and husband Ralph of Mt. Juliet, Tenn.; and brother-in-law Jerry Henson of Lost City, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends and loved ones.
