Patty Dorene Girdner-Thompson

TAHLEQUAH — Patty Dorene Girdner-Thompson was born Feb. 23, 1961, in Tahlequah, to John and Rachel Girdner. She departed this life on Aug. 18, 2012, in Tulsa, at the age of 51, surrounded by her children and family.

Services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 22, at 2 p.m., at Green Country Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Pastor Bo Wolf. Interment will follow at Hungry Mountain Cemetery under the direction of Green Country Funeral Home. Online condolences may be left at tahlequahfuneral.com.

Patty is preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Harold and Gerald; sister, Rachel; and her first husband, Harold Wisdom.

Patty married Harold in 1980, and to this union two children were born, Cassey Jo and Josephus. Harold had two children, Jackie and Mandy, who Patty loved as her own. After Harold’s death, Patty married Ron Thompson and was rewarded with another son, Joshua.

Patty is survived by a loving family, which includes her husband, Ron; daughter, Cassey Jo and husband Wade; son, Josephus; daughter, Mandy and husband Gary; sons Jackie and Joshua; grandchildren Austin Simpson, Amber, Justin and Megan Stephens, Cleo and Jacob Wisdom, and Kylon Thompson; great-grandson, Kyran Stephens; sisters Sadie Long, Betty Cole, Rita Wolf and husband Bo; brothers Jerry Girdner and wife Brenda, Bill John Girdner and wife Lei Lani, Dale Girdner and wife Mary; and numerous nieces and nephews. Patty is also survived by her extended family; Keith Johnson, her longtime best friend, whom she loved like a brother; and Leland and Candy Wolf, who were like her second parents.

Patty attended Tenkiller Elementary and Cave Springs High School. During high school, she became known to her friends as “Bird.” She spent her summers playing softball. She traveled along with her sister over most of Northeast Oklahoma playing with teams in tournaments. After school, she went to work at Toddlers Inn day care center for 10 years. She loved to have her hair brushed, and the kids would take turns brushing her hair as she told them stories.

They are all grown with children of their own, but they still talk about the influence she was in their lives and the great times they had with her at daycare.

After the daycare closed, she went to work at The Echota House Restaurant, in 1987, for Leland and Candy Wolf. She also went to work at Cherokee Elementary School. She loved all her school kids and was loved by each one of them.

Patty had a love for life, family, and friends that had no bounds. She was so proud of her children and grandchildren and of their accomplishments in life. She treated all their friends like they were her own. She helped raise three of her nieces, Jennifer, Patty and Kendra. She took them everywhere with her. They love to tell stories of the softball games they went to with her.

Each and every one of her family members and friends can tell stories and they are all about the love they had for her and the love she had for each one of them.

We all have an emptiness in our hearts that can never be filled. But Patty is in a better place now – in the arms of the Lord, safe and secure.

Poll

Where do you think bicycle trails are most needed in Cherokee County?

In the downtown corridor.
Not downtown, because it would be too congested, but on peripheral streets, like Bluff, Downing and College, and Muskogee but not downtown.
On the rural highways mainly in recreational areas, like Highways 10 and 82.
Only in special areas, like parks.
I do not think Cherokee County needs any (or more) bike trails.
