Jim was born on Aug. 8, 1922, in Park Hill, Okla. As a young boy, Jim attended 51 School and had a great love of horses. In 1940, at the age of 18, he joined the Army and served two tours during World War II, and at one point served under General George S. Patton. On June 6, 1944, Jim landed on Utah Beach in Normandy, France as part of the 145th Infantry Regiment, Company M, during the D-Day Invasion. Also during his second tour, Jim fought at the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium and France.

Jim was the recipient of the Silver Star, two Purple Hearts, the EAME Service Ribbon, and a Good Conduct Medal. He was also a founding member of the Cherokee County Chapter No. 641 Military Order Of The Purple Heart of the United States of America. Jim always spoke very fondly of his military service to his country. He had also served as a past commander of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 3707.

Jim met the love of his life, Roberta McLemore, and they were married on Sept. 1, 1956. They shared 56 years together in Eldon, Okla., on their farm, where they raised cattle, horses, goats, and chickens. They loved to travel on driving trips to neighboring states and spending time with their family and friends. They also enjoyed trail rides, and Jim once rode to Valley Forge, Pa., on horseback. They could also be spotted riding their horses in parades through downtown Tahlequah.

Jim was a longtime member of First Indian Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon until his health prevented him from performing his duties. Jim loved to read books by Louis L’Amour and watching his favorite westerns on television. During baseball season, he loved to watch his favorite team, the St. Louis Cardinals, and once visited the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y.

Jim is preceded in death by his parents, Bob and Nan (Paden) Worthman, and John and Susan Hathcoat; brothers John “Smoke" (Mae) Hathcoat, Floyd (Alma) Hathcoat, Leonard “Bug” (Faye) Hathcoat, Ned Hathcoat and sister Callie (Joe) Waits; son Tommy Worthman; son-in-law Clarence Mahaney; and grandsons Christopher Worthman, Robert Lee Mahaney, and Chuck Stephens.

Jim is survived by his wife, Roberta; son, Michael (Sharon) Worthman, of Cambridge, Ill.; daughter, Nadine Mahaney, of Tahlequah; sister-in-law Jean Hathcoat of Arlington, Texas; grandchildren Barbara (Jeanne) Mahaney-Stephens, of Tahlequah, Matthew Worthman of Illinois, Ronnie (Sheila) Mahaney of Kansas, Okla., Pamela Sandholm of Alabama, Laurel Mahaney of Tahlequah, and Stephanie Mahaney of Tahlequah; great-grandchildren Owen (Junior) Butler, Nicholas Stephens, and Christopher Mahaney, all of Tahlequah; great-great grandchildren Emma Raye Butler, Ethan Michael Butler, and Mayson Jane Butler, all of Tahlequah; and a host of loved ones.

Jim, aka “Papa,” will be missed for his colorful and lively stories that spanned decades. He could often be heard at the coffee shop, regaling people with stories of times past. He was very generous and doted on his children and grandchildren. His cherished memory will live on through his family and friends.

Poll

What do you think of Sen. McCain's proposal to allow cable TV channels to be sold a la carte (individually, rather than in bundles with a lot of channels no one wants)? Bear in mind some less popular channels could go by the wayside with no bundling support, and that while overall packages should theoretically decrease in cost, individual channels might cost more.

Strongly in favor of a la carte.
