Carrington Fox put together a career performance to lead the Northeastern State women’s basketball team to a decisive 79-41 win over the University of Arkansas at Monticello Tuesday night at Jack Dobbins Field House.

The junior forward notched career bests in both rebounds and assists as she finished with 11 points, nine boards, six assists, and four blocks.

“It was just all in the cards tonight,” Fox said. “My teammates got me the ball, we had good high-low posts, and we had good offense all around.”

NSU senior guard Taylor Lewis hit a season-high six three-point shots to lead all scorers with 18 points, and fellow senior guard Tosha Tyler added 10 points for the home team. All 10 members of the team played at least 15 minutes and scored at least four points.

NSU shot a blistering 56 percent from the field (33-for-59), and the team hit its first six three’s en route to a 52 percent night from downtown (11-for-21). The RiverHawks also recorded a season-high 26 assists and a season-low eight turnovers.

“This was a good performance by our team on both ends of the floor,” NSU coach Randy Gipson said. “We came out and hit some three’s to get started after they zoned us early. We were alert and into the game, just like we’d hope they’d be. The team played together on both ends of the floor.”

The Cotton Blossoms were held to just 35 percent shooting (17-for-48) and 14 percent (2-for-14) from behind the arc. Demetra Howlingwolf led the visitors with 12 points.

The 38-point victory was the largest margin since Nov. 7, 2009, and the RiverHawks have now won their last two games by a total of 58 points.

“We’re playing with better energy and more alertly on both ends,” Gipson said. “Our defense was solid and the stats reflect that. The assist-to-turnover ratio also showed that we managed the ball well. We shared it and moved it to the open person.”

NSU 96, Ohio Valley 53 (men)

QUINCY, Ill. — The Northeastern State men’s basketball team dispatched of Ohio Valley University 96-53 Tuesday night inside Pepsi Arena on the opening day of the QU Holiday Tournament.

The RiverHawks (8-1) will now face Truman State (4-4) in the championship match at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 19.

Five different members of the squad reached double figures, led by senior guard Jon Miller’s 16 points. Fellow senior guard Ethan Anderson added 15, and junior guard Bryton Hobbs recorded his first-career double-double with 12 points and a career-high 10 rebounds. He also had time to dish out six assists.

Senior forward Jermaine Bransford and junior forward Marcus Sheppard each added 10 points. NSU received 40 points from its bench and outrebounded Ohio Valley 36-31.

The 96-point explosion was the most scored by a RiverHawk squad in more than three years. NSU recorded 99 against Hillsdale College on Dec. 8, 2009.

NSU will play again today against Truman at 7:30 p.m.
