NSU men's hoops picked 14th in MIAA poll

The Northeastern State men’s basketball team was selected to finish 14th in the 2012-13 MIAA Preseason Coaches and Media Polls released today.

The RiverHawks are set to begin their inaugural season in the MIAA, and they are coming off a 5-21 campaign as a Division II independent last season.

NSU will begin play at 7 p.m. Nov. 12 with a home matchup against Northwest Oklahoma State.

“I think the ranking is what we deserve based on last year,” NSU head men’s basketball coach Larry Gipson said. “I don’t see how we could be picked very highly, but it’s up to us to prove that we’re not a bottom-end team in the MIAA.

“I really like our team after 10 practices. Our guys are focused and working hard every day. Teams that come in with a good attitude about accepting coaching and working hard usually end up being pretty good teams.”

Washburn, who won last season’s conference tournament, has been picked by both the media and coaches to finish first again this year. The Ichabods represented the MIAA in the NCAA Tournament along with Northwest Missouri and Missouri Southern.

Central Missouri, who finished tied for the conference regular season crown, has been picked second in both polls picking up three first place votes from the coaches. Northwest Missouri, who also took home a piece of the regular season crown, has been picked to finish third this season in both polls, picking up a first place vote from the coaches.

The coaches poll picked Fort Hays State and Pittsburg State in a tie for the fourth spot while the media picked PSU No. 5 and FHSU tied for No. 6. Missouri Southern picked up one first place vote in the media poll where they sit No. 4 and are No. 6 in the coaches poll. Lindenwood is tied for No. 6 in the media poll and No. 8 in the coaches poll. Central Oklahoma is projected to finish No. 7 by the coaches and No. 9 by the media.

In the No. 8 spot in the media poll is Southwest Baptist who earned the No. 9 slot in the coaches poll. Emporia State normalizes things once again by getting picked No. 10 and are followed by No. 11 Nebraska-Kearney in both polls. Missouri Western occupies the No. 12 spot in the coaches poll and sits in the No. 13 spot for the media. Truman flip-flops with the Griffons sitting at No. 12 in the media poll and No. 13 for the coaches.

The poll normalizes once again at the bottom as Northeastern State is picked to finish No. 14 and Lincoln is picked to finish No. 15 this season by both the coaches and the media.

Many MIAA teams will tip-off on Nov. 9 and MIAA play is set to get underway on Dec. 5 around the league.

Where do you think bicycle trails are most needed in Cherokee County?

In the downtown corridor.
Not downtown, because it would be too congested, but on peripheral streets, like Bluff, Downing and College, and Muskogee but not downtown.
On the rural highways mainly in recreational areas, like Highways 10 and 82.
Only in special areas, like parks.
I do not think Cherokee County needs any (or more) bike trails.
