BOLIVAR, Mo. — The Northeastern State women’s basketball team defeated Southwest Baptist 59-43 Saturday night at Meyer Sports Center.
The RiverHawks (9-5, 4-2 MIAA) committed a season-low six turnovers and earned their first league road win. The Bearcats (6-8, 1-5 MIAA) dropped their fourth-straight contest.
Senior guard Taylor Lewis led the visitors with 18 points, and sophomore guard Fontana Tate tied her career high with 13 of her own.
NSU was outrebounded 40-32, but the green and white led in steals (7-2), blocks (3-0), points in the paint (24-20), points off turnovers (13-4), and turnovers committed (6-14).
Jacqui Zelenka scored the first basket of the game to give SBU a 2-0 lead, but Northeastern State went on a 10-0 run and never trailed again.
The RiverHawks led 28-14 at the half, and they were able to build a 24-point advantage at 45-21 with 11:45 to play. Southwest Baptist fought all the way back to within 11 points at one point, but NSU would not allow the home side to get any closer.
Zelenka led the Bearcats with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Brittney Dukes came off the bench to score 13.
Northeastern State will stay on the road to face Central Oklahoma at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in Edmond.
The NSU men, led by 16 points apiece from Bryton Hobbs and Landon DeMasters, fell to Southwest Baptist 68-60.
