ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Northeastern State closed out a three-game set with Missouri Western on Saturday with a 10-3 loss. The RiverHawks lost all three games to the Griffons by a combined score of 31-10.
In the series finale, Missouri Western broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the fourth inning. The Griffons would go on to score seven more unanswered runs before NSU posted a two-run rally in the ninth frame.
Trevor Walch suffered the loss for the RiverHawks, giving up six runs (three earned) on eight hits in 4 2/3 innings of work. Walch also walked three and struck out one.
For the Griffons (15-3, 10-0 MIAA), Banks Born was nearly untouchable for seven innings, allowing only five hits and one run to go along with four strikeouts.
The lone offensive bright spot for the RiverHawks (11-10, 11-10) was Ryan Staggs, who finished 2 for 4 with a run batted in.
NSU will return to the diamond on Wednesday at home against Missouri Southern at 1 p.m.
NSU softball goes 1-1
JOPLIN, Mo. — Lisa Ripperger laced a RBI single in the first inning, and Northeastern State never looked back en route to a 5-1 victory over Misssouri Southern in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday. NSU and Missouri Southern split the two-game set with the Lions winning the first game, 7-2.
NSU added to its 1-0 lead in the second inning on Navada Campos’ solo home run to left field.
Madison Reed tacked on a RBI single for NSU in the fourth, and Lindsea Ross and Saharra Henson both drove in runs in the fifth inning to increase NSU’s lead to 5-0.
The RiverHawks (9-15, 1-3) salvaged a victory during weekend play after dropping two games at Pittsburg State on Friday.
Picking up the victory for NSU in the pitching circle on Saturday was Shelby Enole, who pitched a complete-game eight-hitter. Enloe recorded two strikeouts and didn’t walk a batter during the winning effort.
NSU will now be off until Saturday when it takes on Nebraska Kearney on the road at noon.
