MIAA Men

Ahead of the pack

Fort Hays State: The Lions are a tied with Central Missouri for first place, but a tie-breaking win early in the season by Fort Hays State gives it the upper hand at the moment. FHSU skyrocketed up the standings in a span of seven days, going from a tie for fifth to a tie for first after two wins. Wins over Northwest Missouri State and Nebraska Kearney added to the Lions’ current five-game winning streak.



Up and coming

Central Oklahoma: An afterthought two weeks ago, the Bronchos have played themselves into a decent spot in the standings. Currently on a three-game winning tilt, Central Oklahoma has five games left (three at home) against teams below it in the standings, save for a road contest at Northeastern State on Nov. 27.



On the skids

Central Missouri: The Mules are still in decent shape — tied with Fort Hays State for the league lead. However, Central Missouri wrapped up a four-game road swing with a 1-3 mark to bring it back to the rest of the pack.



Notes

Accolade for Addison: Marquis Addison was named the league’s men’s basketball Athlete of the Week after guiding Missouri Southern to a 2-0 mark last week. Addison, a 6-4 junior guard from Olathe, Kan., averaged 23 points, eight rebounds and 6.5 assists per game in the Lions’ wins over Southwest Baptist and Central Missouri. It’s the second time this season that Addison has received the honor.

Offensive explosion: During Fort Hays State’s 94-68 victory over Nebraska Kearney on Saturday, the Lions shot lights out from the field in the first half. En route to a 62-32 halftime lead, the Lions shot 69.7 percent (23 of 33) from the field. Freshman guard Craig Nicholson led Fort Hays State in the game with 16 points and 11 assists.



MIAA Women

Ahead of the pack

Washburn: The Lady Blues just continue to roll along, picking up two more wins last week to up their winning streak to six games since losing at Northeastern State on Jan. 19. Washburn’s last four games have been at home, and it will now go on the road for two games (Missouri Western and Northwest Missouri State).



Up and coming

Emporia State: The Hornets have now won seven games in a row, dating back to a loss suffered against Truman on Jan. 12. Emporia State clobbered Lincoln (85-69) and Lindenwood (85-54) last week to continue its ascend up the standings. A full game behind Northeastern State, the Hornets are all alone in fourth right now.



On the skids

Lindenwood: Perhaps it’s a good thing that Lindenwood is not eligible for the league tournament, because the Lady Lions would likely one and done. Lindenwood has lost eight straight games, and its two losses last week were by an average of 34 a game.



Notes

Kudos for Keuna: Central Missouri’s Keuna Flax was named this week’s women’s basketball Athlete of the Week. Last week, the 5-foot-11 junior forward averaged 25 points a game to lead the Jennies to wins over Central Oklahoma and Missouri Southern.

Well represented: The MIAA continued its stranglehold on top-10 spots in the top 25 this week. Of the top seven spots, the MIAA currently owns two with Washburn at No. 6 and Central Missouri at seventh. Truman, which fell out of the top 25, Pittsburg State, Fort Hays State and Northeastern State are also all receiving votes for the top 25.

Local flavor: Green Country is being well represented in the MIAA — and Northeastern State doesn’t even count. At Pittsburg State, former Bixby standout Y’Cedria Devers is averaging 3.5 points a game. She has also led the Gorillas in rebounding four times this season, including Saturday’s win over Southwest Baptist when she had seven.



Men: Lindenwood at Central Missouri, Wednesday

A rematch of Lindenwood’s 83-82 win over the Mules on Feb. 2. Central Missouri needs to win to stay even with Fort Hays State.



Women: Northeastern State at Pittsburg State, Saturday

Could end up being a big swing game in the standings. Could also decide who gets a bye come league tournament time.
