Motorcycle crash blamed on errant deer

A Park Hill man was listed stable condition Monday after he tried to avoid hitting a deer while riding his motorcycle in Sequoyah County.

Dennis Overton, 53, was taken to Sparks Hospital in Fort Smith, Ark., for treatment of leg injuries. He was transported from the scene by Pafford EMS.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol reports state Overton was westbound on Moonshine Road when a deer came from the north and hit Overton on the leg.

Overton was able to maneuver the motorcycle a little farther down the road and stopped in a private drive, a tenth of a mile west of the area of impact. Overton was not wearing a helmet and took no improper action in the crash.

The crash was reported at 10:57 a.m. and investigated by OHP Trooper Danny Upton.

The use of cell phones while driving is increasingly becoming an issue. What do you think about cell phone use by emergency personnel, like law enforcement officers, EMTs, firemen, etc.?

• If the law allows the common citizen to use cell phones while driving, emergency personnel should be able to also.
• Emergency personnel should be held to a higher standard. Since they are often driving faster than normal, they should not be allowed to use cell phones while driving, even if other citizens can.
• They should be allowed to use them like anyone else, but their host entities (hospitals, fire departments, cities, etc.) should carry extra insurance for this reason.
• Don't know.
