Keys set for school opening

KEYS – Members of the Keys Board of Education took the final steps Monday night to ready the district for the opening of classes Aug. 12.

The board voted to hire Travis Kirby as a lay wrestling coach and signed contracts for certified and support personnel during their August meeting. After a 10-minute executive session to discuss negotiations with teachers, board members returned to open session and voted to table the issue until September.

Superintendent Jerry Hood said with the conclusion of Monday’s business, everything’s ready for the start of classes.

“Our custodians and maintenance people have everything looking good,” he said.

Hood reported the asphalt has been completed at the high school parking lot, a $27,000 improvement. Work is proceeding on the new wrestling and football dressing room building.

“If you haven’t seen it lately, you need to go look at it,” he told board members.

The building is projected for completion in about a month. Members approved other routine items, including:

• Adding $500 per month to High School Principal Calvin Klugh’s salary for mileage.

• Raising the pay for a paraprofessional teacher’s assistant to $12,500 per year.

Hood said the district has only one person in that position, and with the pay raise given substitutes, some were earning more than she was.

• The Oklahoma Public Unemployment Compensation account and the procurement plan for the upcoming school year.
