Rain may add color to fall foliage

TAHLEQUAH DAILY PRESS — If you were coming into Tahlequah during the mid-morning hours Wednesday morning, chances are you were driving through small ponds on the road with more rain pounding overhead.

Mike Underwood, with Cherokee County Emergency Services, said the county overall got more than an inch and a half of rain.

“I don’t believe anyone got washed away,” Underwood said. “It was pretty uneventful.”

Uneventful maybe, but odd nonetheless.

“This rain is not typical for this time of year,” he said. “And they are calling for more rain off and on the rest of the week, with spotty thunderstorms.”

Underwood said the forecast in this area shows the largest chance of rains are Saturday and Sunday.

“I don’t know of any wind, but definitely some lightning and heavy rains,” he said.

But with all the moisture we got in August and now September, it should result in a beautiful fall.

“It means the colors will be brighter and more foliage,” he said.

“It’s usually real dry and hot. I haven’t heard anyone complain yet, and they usually are by this time of the year. They are just enjoying a greener lawn and garden.”

According to the National Weather Service’s Website, Tahlequah is forecasted for a 50 percent chance of rain today.
