Weston seeks election to Ward 1 seat

TAHLEQUAH — Diane Weston recently announced her intent to run for the Ward 1 seat on the Tahlequah City Council.

Weston has served the past year and a half in this capacity after being appointed by the council after former Ward 1 Council member Jason Nichols was elected mayor.

Throughout her tenure as Ward 1 councilor, Weston has hosted several Ward 1 “Speak Out” meetings, where members were encouraged to share their thoughts, ideas and concerns about the future of the city of Tahlequah.

Weston has also served on subcommittees focusing on special interests that affect the city and has worked to make sure the city’s financial interests benefit all citizens and not just a few chosen groups.

Weston is an Oklahoma State University graduate who has lived in Tahlequah for 25 years with her husband, Rocky Weston, a sixth-grade teacher at Tahlequah Middle School. The couple have three children: Taylor, 23, a second-year graduate student at Northeastern State University who plans to graduate in May as a speech-language pathologist; Tanner, 19, a freshman at NSU; and Kenley, 15, a freshman at Tahlequah High School. The family attends First Baptist Church in Tahlequah.

Weston has worked as a child development specialist for 27 years for the Oklahoma Department of Health, and currently serves as a primary service provider for the SoonerStart program, working with young children who have special needs.

She also works as a real estate agent for Cochran and Associates Real Estate, and serves as a crisis hotline volunteer for Help-In-Crisis.

“I have worked and volunteered in the ‘helping field’ for over 27 years,” said Weston. “I am eager to continue helping the people of Tahlequah have their voices heard, representing their neighborhood, as well as their city.”

Poll

Where do you think bicycle trails are most needed in Cherokee County?

In the downtown corridor.
Not downtown, because it would be too congested, but on peripheral streets, like Bluff, Downing and College, and Muskogee but not downtown.
On the rural highways mainly in recreational areas, like Highways 10 and 82.
Only in special areas, like parks.
I do not think Cherokee County needs any (or more) bike trails.
