Corps can’t confirm Tenkiller algae

TAHLEQUAH — U.S. Corps of Engineers officials on Wednesday said they were unable to find visual confirmation of potential algae blooms reported at Lake Tenkiller last week.

On its Facebook page, the Corps said after initial reports, it has now received more reports of algae blooms and water discoloration. A biologist with the agency went to the lake Tuesday and sampled the areas.

The Corps said it expects results from those tests as early as Thursday. Spokesman Nate Herring last week said blue-green algae blooms are somewhat unpredictable, often lasting only a day, or perhaps weeks.

Test results have also confirmed blue-green algae in various parts of Lake Fort Gibson. The Corps said levels of blue-green algae at Rocky Point beach, Big Hollow Creek, Taylor Ferry’s north beach, Sequoyah State Park’s bay-area beach, and Ranger Creek are considered low risk, based on recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control.

Out of precaution, Taylor Ferry’s swim beach remains closed until further notice.
