Fake gun threat lands would-be robber in jail

TAHLEQUAH — Tahlequah police arrested a man Tuesday afternoon who allegedly pretended to have a wea-pon and tried to rob the Dollar General store on Downing Street.

Charles Henkel, 36, was booked for attempted robbery by force and fear. He appeared before District Judge Darrell Shepherd Wednesday morning and was ordered held on a $40,000 bond.

Tahlequah Police Detective Chris Boals said Henkel went into Dollar General and demanded an employee hand over money. Boals said Henkel insinuated to the employee that he had a weapon.

The store employee wouldn’t cooperate with Henkel’s demands, and instead evacuated customers from the store, according to Boals. Henkel then allegedly attempted to break into the store’s cash registers, but was unsuccessful. He later left the store, saw the store employee out front, and again demanded money.

Boals said customers confronted Henkel outside of the business, and Henkel fled from the scene. Patrons of the business then followed Henkel as police were being contacted, and officers found and arrested him on Shawnee Street shortly after.

Boals said officers did not find a weapon on Henkel when he was arrested.

Poll

What do you think of Sen. McCain's proposal to allow cable TV channels to be sold a la carte (individually, rather than in bundles with a lot of channels no one wants)? Bear in mind some less popular channels could go by the wayside with no bundling support, and that while overall packages should theoretically decrease in cost, individual channels might cost more.

Strongly in favor of a la carte.
Somewhat in favor of a la carte.
Somewhat opposed to a la carte.
