Area man dies in single-car crash

VIAN – A Vian man died early Friday morning from injuries suffered in a single-vehicle crash north his hometown.

William Evans, 23, was headed north on State Highway 82 at 4 a.m., Friday when, for an unknown reason, he gradually ran off the left side of the road. The vehicle, a 1987 Ford Bronco, traveled 150 feet down a ditch before striking a tree.

Evans was not wearing his seat belt, and was the lone occupant of the vehicle. The cause of the crash and Evans’ condition are listed as unknown. Evans was pinned approximately an hour and 10 minutes before being freed by the Blackgum Fire Department using the Jaws of Life.

The crash occurred 7.7 miles north of Vian, and it was raining at the time. The crash was investigated by Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Shawn Griffey of the Sequoyah County detachment.

The use of cell phones while driving is increasingly becoming an issue. What do you think about cell phone use by emergency personnel, like law enforcement officers, EMTs, firemen, etc.?

• If the law allows the common citizen to use cell phones while driving, emergency personnel should be able to also.
• Emergency personnel should be held to a higher standard. Since they are often driving faster than normal, they should not be allowed to use cell phones while driving, even if other citizens can.
• They should be allowed to use them like anyone else, but their host entities (hospitals, fire departments, cities, etc.) should carry extra insurance for this reason.
