Snow poses issues for some area drivers

TAHLEQUAH — A large number of Cherokee County drivers found themselves stuck in area ditches Wednesday after the county received several inches of snow.

Gary Dotson, director of Tahlequah-Cherokee County Emergency Management, said parts of the county received 5 inches of snow or more before noon on Wednesday.

Snow quickly began to accumulate in yards and on vehicles, and soon packed onto area roads. State officials quickly labeled the regions streets as being slick and hazardous, and local first responders were slammed with 911 calls for a period of time.

But as the morning’s round of snow came to a halt, snow began to melt and to slush. Most county schools called off their day early as a precaution.

Forecasters were calling for more wintry precipitation Wednesday evening, including sleet and freezing rain into the early morning hours of Thursday. The National Weather Service in Tulsa estimated the county could receive 1/10th to  3/10ths of an inch of ice.

Rain and freezing rain were also expected Thursday, with little or no accumulation, the NWS said.
