Local man hit with drug, weapons charges

TAHLEQUAH —

Cherokee County prosecutors filed drug and weapons charges this week against a local man.

Joe Lee Holcomb is charged with possession of a firearm after a former conviction and possession of a controlled drug. Holcomb, 59, was convicted of a 1990 possession of marijuana with intent to distribute charge.

Authorities allege Holcomb had a .22-caliber pistol and methamphetamine on Feb. 20 when sheriff’s deputies and Cherokee Nation marshals contacted him.

The firearms charge is punishable by imprisonment for one to 10 years and the drug possession count is punishable by imprisonment for two to 10 years and/or a fine of up to $10,000. Assistant District Attorney Josh King is prosecuting the case.

Holcomb is free on bond and awaiting an April 5 court appearance on Associate District Judge Mark Dobbins’ felony sounding docket. Holcomb will be represented by court-appointed counsel.
