TAHLEQUAH —
A fifth Cherokee County man threw his hat into this year’s sheriff’s race on Thursday.
V. Kevin McFarland, an independent, filed his declaration of candidacy at the Cherokee County Election Board. McFarland joins incumbent Norman Fisher, a Democrat, and Democratic challengers Johnny Parris, Charley Batt and Clint Johnson.
No other county offices had new filings on Thursday. Candidates for sheriff, District 2 county commissioner, county clerk and county court clerk have until 5 p.m. today to submit their declarations of candidacy.
Meanwhile, at the state election board, Republican Wayne Pettigrew of McAlester added his name to the list of candidates seeking to represent the 2nd congressional district, as did independent Michael G. Fulks, of Heavener.
Wayne Shaw, a Grove Republican, added his name as a candidate for state Senate District 3 on Thursday. Barney S. Taylor, a Muskogee Republican, filed Thursday to seek the state Senate seat for District 9.
For the District 14 House seat, Democrat Jerry Rains put his name on the list of declared candidates. Honesimo Garcia of Rose, a Republican, filed a declaration of candidacy Thursday to seek the state House District 86 seat.
House District 4 drew no new candidates, leaving incumbent Mike Brown the only person to have filed as of Thursday.
