TAHLEQUAH —
Cherokee County sheriff’s investigators arrested a convicted sex offender recently after he was found to be living near a Tahlequah elementary school and a daycare.
Larry Delane Clayton, 56, was arrested for failing to register as a sex offender, sex offender living within 2,000 feet of a school, and false impersonation to avoid prosecution.
Sheriff’s Investigator James Brown said Clayton was convicted of first-degree rape and incest nearly 20 years ago. He is labeled as a level-three sex offender and must register with authorities every 90 days, but Clayton last checked in Sept. 8, 2011, in Adair County.
Brown said he received information that Clayton was living in Cherokee County the past four months but never registered. Deputies located Clayton at a local casino, and he allegedly gave them a false name in an attempt to avoid being arrested.
